PPG Waterborne Basecoat

Long before most of North America's body shops had even given through to waterborne finishes, PPG was already immersed in it. That's because PPG saw the environmental handwriting on the wall even before it was written andfor the past two decades has been developing and refining its technological expertise in both North America and Europe. Having worked closely with OEMs in their transition to waterborne at vehicle assembly plants, PPG scientists understood early on that the refinish industry would have to move away from solvent-based paints.

Going green in collision repair.

Today, shop owners and managers are making the conversion from solventborne to waterborne even though local VOC regulations don't require such a move.

Some want to get a jump on the technology (and the competition) in anticipation of stricter regulations in their local region.

Others are taking a proactive approach to creating a safer environment for the workplace and the surrounding community.

These case studies profile collision centers located in less-regulated regions—progressive shops that have readily adopted the green way of doing business in collision repair.

"They handed me a spray gun and asked me to try my hand at painting a panel," he recalled. "Given that the only painting I ever did was with a brush, I was surprised and impressed with how easy it was to apply. I thought to myself, 'if I can paint a good match, our skilled painters will sure be able to.'"

Paint technician Bennie Miller echoed the praise. "I've been using PPG products for over 30 years, and this time they really have outdone themselves with this Envirobase HP waterborne paint. It offers high productivity, and application is so easy, anyone can spray it."

To accomodate the waterborne system, LaFontaine installed a state-of-the-art waterborne spray booth with the AdvanceCure™ Accelerated Airflow System from GFS. The curing system uses high velocity air blower towers to speed flash off and drying times.
